In Meta\u2019s quarterly earnings call in April, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg <\/a>was on the defensive. The metaverse, the vision of a globe-spanning virtual reality that he had literally bet his multibillion-dollar empire on creating, had been usurped<\/a> as the new hot thing by the growing hype around artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI).<\/p>\n

Critics had even noticed Meta itself changing its tune<\/a>, highlighting the difference between a November statement <\/a>from Zuckerberg, in which he described the project as a \u201chigh-priority growth area\u201d and a March note<\/a> that instead focused on how \u201cadvancing AI\u201d was the company\u2019s \u201csingle largest investment\u201d.<\/p>\n
