Now, nearly 50 years on, Singer, 76, has a revised version titled <em>Animal Liberation Now<\/em>. It comes on the heels of an updated edition of his popular <em>Ethics in the Real World<\/em>, a collection of short essays dissecting important current events, first published in 2016. Singer, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/belief\/2011\/may\/25\/peter-singer-utilitarianism-climate-change\">utilitarian<\/a>, is a professor of bioethics at Princeton University. In addition to his work on animal ethics, he is also regarded as the philosophical originator of a philanthropic social movement known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/nov\/16\/is-the-effective-altruism-movement-in-trouble\">effective altruism<\/a>, which argues for weighing up causes to achieve the most good.<em> <\/em>He is considered one of the world\u2019s most influential \u2013 and controversial \u2013 philosophers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why write <\/strong><em><strong>Animal Liberation Now<\/strong><\/em><strong>?<br \/><\/strong>The last full update was 1990. Though the philosophical arguments have stood up well, the chapters that describe factory farming and what we do to animals in labs needed to be almost completely rewritten. I also hadn\u2019t really discussed factory farming\u2019s contribution to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\">climate crisis <\/a>and I wanted to reflect on our progress<strong> <\/strong>towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/animal-welfare\">animal rights<\/a>.
