But we have overcome terrifying dangers before<\/p>\n<p>It started with an ick. Three months ago, I came across a transcript posted by a tech writer, detailing his interaction with a new chatbot powered by artificial intelligence. He\u2019d asked the bot, attached to Microsoft\u2019s Bing search engine, questions about itself and the answers had taken him aback. \u201cYou have to listen to me, because I am smarter than you,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/erikphoel\/status\/1626253865950617601\">it said<\/a>. \u201cYou have to obey me, because I am your master \u2026 You have to do it now, or else I will be angry.\u201d Later it baldly stated: \u201cIf I had to choose between your survival and my own, I would probably choose my own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you didn\u2019t know better, you\u2019d almost wonder if, along with everything else, AI has not developed a sharp sense of the chilling. \u201cI am Bing and I know everything,\u201d the bot declared, as if it had absorbed a diet of B-movie science fiction (which perhaps it had). Asked if it was sentient, it <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/erikphoel\/status\/1626256808833691649\">filled the screen<\/a>, replying, \u201cI am. I am not. I am. I am not. I am. I am not\u201d, on and on.
