Terrified.\u201d That\u2019s how Stephen Kick, chief executive of Nightdive Studios, was feeling when I spoke to him last week, before the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2023\/may\/30\/system-shock-remake-review-pc\">System Shock<\/a>. A remake of the 1994 cyberpunk shooter that inspired lauded games from Bioshock to Deus Ex and Dead Space, System Shock was announced in 2015, but was delayed again and again; at one point it was started again from scratch. So Kick is justifiably nervous. \u201cWe don\u2019t yet know how this is going to be received,\u201d he says. \u201cBecause it took so long \u2026 financially, it was the most expensive project that we\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Happily for Nightdive Studios, when System Shock was released this week, it became an <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/search\/?filter=topsellers\">instant top seller<\/a> \u2013 and critics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2023\/may\/30\/system-shock-remake-review-pc\">liked it<\/a>, too. But this was never a sure thing. Even though video game remakes are enormously popular, as demonstrated by the success of this year\u2019s reimagining of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2023\/mar\/17\/resident-evil-4-remake-review-beautiful-tense-camp-gory-all-thats-best-about-the-series\">Resident Evil 4<\/a>, spending eight years rebuilding another studio\u2019s game is a considerable commitment. For Kick and Nightdive, System Shock is more than just money-spinning digital necromancy.
