They have somehow \u201cread\u201d (that is, ingested) everything ever published in machine-readable form and <a href=\"https:\/\/writings.stephenwolfram.com\/2023\/02\/what-is-chatgpt-doing-and-why-does-it-work\/\">create sentences word by word<\/a>, at each point making a statistical guess of \u201cwhat one might expect someone to write after seeing what people have written on billions of webpages, etc\u201d. That\u2019s it!<\/p>\n<p>Ever since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/dec\/05\/what-is-ai-chatbot-phenomenon-chatgpt-and-could-it-replace-humans\">ChatGPT arrived last November<\/a>, people have been astonished by the capabilities of these parrots \u2013 how humanlike they seem to be and so on. But consolation was drawn initially from the thought that since the models were drawing only on what already resided in their capacious memories, then they couldn\u2019t be genuinely original: they would just regurgitate the conventional wisdom embedded in their training data.
