Amazon considers its \u2018Flex drivers\u2019 independent contractors \u2013 meaning they\u2019re not promised worker\u2019s compensation after a bite<\/p>\n

The app told her to deliver to the porch. Jennifer Anderson, a 43-year-old gig worker for Amazon Flex and a single mother, had brought packages to the house before \u2013 so she didn\u2019t think much of it when she saw two unsecured dogs: a heeler and a chihuahua, which was barking at her. Dogs are everywhere in eastern Idaho, and Anderson\u2019s own dog was a herding breed similar to the heeler. \u201cI\u2019ve never had a fear of dogs my entire life,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

When she got to the doorstep, the chihuahua suddenly started biting her, but barely broke the skin. Anderson told the tiny dog to \u201cstop\u201d and started walking to her car. That\u2019s when the heeler lunged, sinking his teeth into her ankle. Anderson screamed and managed to get back in her vehicle. The wound was bleeding badly. \u201cI was just shaking and completely shocked,\u201d she says. The owner came out but didn\u2019t seem overly apologetic. \u201cI know I need to get a collar for him,\u201d he told her casually, \u201cbut my last dog was way worse.\u201d<\/p>\n
