Since buying Twitter for $44bn in October 2022, Musk has fired<\/a> thousands of staffers, including those working in content moderation, trust and safety, and public policy. He\u2019s opened up<\/a> verification, once reserved for notable users, to anyone that pays a $8 subscription fee, making it impossible to tell who\u2019s real and who\u2019s not. He\u2019s blown up messaging, restricting<\/a> the platform\u2019s ability to privately text nearly any user to only those who pay. He\u2019s booted<\/a> journalists he doesn\u2019t like from the service, labeled NPR as \u201cstate-affiliated media\u201d, throttled<\/a> traffic to news sites, reinstated<\/a> previously-banned white nationalists, resurrected<\/a> Donald Trump\u2019s account, unleashed<\/a> threats and harassment on former staff members, killed<\/a> the best bots, feuded<\/a> with the Anti-Defamation League, deprecated<\/a> headlines, toyed<\/a> with putting the whole site behind a paywall, installed a CEO who will forever be known for a disastrous<\/a> first public interview, and destroyed one of the world\u2019s most recognizable brand names \u2013 Twitter \u2013 by changing it to X.<\/p>\n
