And then, in May 2014, Narendra Modi, leader of the BJP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/may\/16\/narendra-modi-victory-congress-india-election\">was elected<\/a>, swept to power on a standard-issue neoliberal platform of modernisation, privatisation and liberalisation of the economy, slashing welfare budgets, lowering corporate taxes, abolishing wealth taxes, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Modi\u2019s election, wrote the august journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2020\/07\/13\/modi-india-hindutva-hindu-nationalism-autocracy\/\">Foreign Policy<\/a><\/em>, marked a critical milestone in his country\u2019s development. He was \u201cthe first leader since independence to command a lower-house parliamentary majority that did not belong to the Congress party of India\u2019s founders Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. After 65 years, a dynastic founding party was subsumed by new blood.\u201d But in the six years since his first election (he was re-elected in 2019), the journal continued, \u201cit has become clear that his style of leadership poses an existential threat to the world\u2019s largest democracy.
