In a mere 20,000 words, or thereabouts, the order directs an innumerable number of federal agencies and government departments that oversee \u201ceverything from housing to health to national security <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/technology\/2023\/10\/31\/23939157\/biden-ai-executive-order?ueid=f8c5307ecd8ea994c3aac686057d4b14\">to create standards and regulations for the use or oversight of AI<\/a>\u201d. These bodies are required to develop guidance on the responsible use of AI in areas such as criminal justice, education, healthcare, housing and labour, \u201cwith a focus on protecting Americans\u2019 civil rights and liberties\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Stirring stuff, eh? Within No 10, though, there might have been some infuriated spin doctors. After all, the main purpose of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/oct\/30\/no-10-fends-off-claims-rishi-sunak-being-snubbed-over-ai-safety-summit\">Bletchley Park AI safety summit<\/a> was to hype the prime minister\u2019s claim to \u201cglobal leadership\u201d in this matter, and here was bloody Biden announcing tangible plans actually to <em>do something<\/em> about the technology rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/ai-safety-summit-2023-the-bletchley-declaration\/the-bletchley-declaration-by-countries-attending-the-ai-safety-summit-1-2-november-2023\">just fostering lofty \u201cdeclarations\u201d<\/a>.
