Trusting them could lead to disaster<\/p>\n<p>This month, the British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/topical-events\/ai-safety-summit-2023\">convened<\/a> government representatives, AI companies and experts at Bletchley Park \u2013 the historic home of Allied code-breaking during the second world war \u2013 to discuss how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/nov\/01\/elon-musk-calls-ai-one-of-the-biggest-threats-to-humanity-at-summit\">much-hyped technology<\/a> can be deployed safely.<\/p>\n<p>The summit has been rightly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openrightsgroup.org\/press-releases\/letter-to-rishi-sunak-ai-summit\/\">criticised<\/a> on a number of grounds, including prioritising input from big tech over civil society voices, and fixating on far-fetched existential risks over tangible everyday harms. But the summit\u2019s biggest failure \u2013 itself a direct result of those biases \u2013 was that it had nothing meaningful to say about reining in the dominant corporations that pose the biggest threat to our safety.<\/p>\n<p>Georg Riekeles is associate director of the European Policy Centre, an independent thinktank based in Brussels.
