Answer: reach for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gartner_hype_cycle\">Gartner Hype Cycle<\/a>, an ingenious diagram that maps the progress of an emerging technology through five phases: the \u201ctechnology trigger\u201d, which is followed by a rapid rise to the \u201cpeak of inflated expectations\u201d; this is succeeded by a rapid decline into the \u201ctrough of disillusionment\u201d, after which begins a gentle climb up the \u201cslope of enlightenment\u201d \u2013 before eventually (often years or decades later) reaching the \u201cplateau of productivity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Given the current hysteria about AI, I thought I\u2019d check to see where it is on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/articles\/what-s-new-in-artificial-intelligence-from-the-2023-gartner-hype-cycle\">chart<\/a>. It shows that generative AI (the polite term for ChatGPT and co) has just reached the peak of inflated expectations. That squares with the fevered predictions of the tech industry (not to mention governments) that AI will be transformative and will soon be ubiquitous.
