But the advantage of a slow week (I hope that isn\u2019t tempting fate) is that you can reflect on the past 12 months and realise that, sometimes, there\u2019s only a few stories that <em>really<\/em> matter.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Guardian has confirmed it was hit by a ransomware attack in December and that the personal data of UK staff members has been accessed in the incident.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe believe this was a criminal ransomware attack, and not the specific targeting of the Guardian as a media organisation,\u201d said Guardian Media Group\u2019s chief executive, <\/em><em>Anna Bateson<\/em><em> and the Guardian\u2019s editor-in-chief, <\/em><em>Katharine Viner<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The UK government is at high risk of a \u201ccatastrophic ransomware attack\u201d that could \u201cbring the country to a standstill\u201d because of poor planning and a lack of investment, a parliamentary committee has warned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Future ransomware attacks could pose \u201ca threat to physical security or safety of human life\u201d, the report said, if cyber-attackers manage to sabotage CNI operations. The report also warned that \u201ccyber-physical systems\u201d could be intercepted, including hackers taking control of the steering and throttle of a shipping vessel \u2013 lab experiments have shown this to be achievable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou need to imagine something more intelligent than us by the same difference that we\u2019re more intelligent than a frog.
