Ronnie, a Bangladeshi who now lives in France, had travelled back to\u00a0his\u00a0home country to\u00a0attend Bishwa Ijtema. The annual meeting of millions of Muslims from around the world is\u00a0the second largest Islamic congregation\u00a0after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2023\/jun\/28\/the-road-to-mecca-is-fraught-with-challenges-but-theres-nothing-like-the-hajj-pilgrimage-to-turn-hearts\">the hajj, in Mecca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery inch of tarmac and pavement was filled\u00a0with worshippers,\u201d Ronnie recalls. \u201cThousands of Muslims gathered to pray, bringing buses and\u00a0lorries to a grinding halt. Many passengers were praying; the drivers were, too. In the\u00a0background we could see the colourful tents where the pilgrims sleep.
