Most probably, Rhysida, the hacker gang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/nov\/24\/rhysida-the-new-ransomware-gang-behind-british-library-cyber-attack\">that orchestrated the attack<\/a> and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/nov\/24\/rhysida-the-new-ransomware-gang-behind-british-library-cyber-attack\">thought to be Russian<\/a>, had already been creeping undetected through the digital territories of the British Library for months, Enrico Mariconti, a lecturer in security and crime science at UCL, told me.<\/p>\n<p>Once it broke through to the library\u2019s virtual private network (VPN) \u2013 the remote connection that allows employees to access its network from any location \u2013 it could in theory<strong> <\/strong>start making its way through locked door after locked door of the library\u2019s many online systems, trawling until it discovered emails and documents containing details such as employees\u2019 passport scans and work contracts.
