There is a joke in the first season of the HBO show Hacks, pitched by Hannah Einbinder\u2019s gen Z character, Ava, to her boomer employer, Deborah Vance: \u201cI had a horrible nightmare that I got a voicemail,\u201d she says. Ha \u2013 gen Z hates voicemail; boomers don\u2019t understand jokes without punchlines. \u201cWhat?\u201d shrieks Jean Smart\u2019s Vance. Ha \u2013 everyone\u2019s disgusting, and no single generation will give an inch to another.<\/p>\n

Sorry to insert gen X into the mix, but in the context of this particular flashpoint, we need to talk about voice memos. (Or audio messages, or voice texts, not to be confused with voice-to-text, which is something else entirely \u2013 all right, Grandma?)<\/p>\n
