He talked up the PlayStation 5 as potentially Sony\u2019s \u201cmost successful ever console across multiple vectors\u201d \u2013 interestingly, he did not specify what those vectors actually were. Time spent playing? Individual player spend? Sales? It would have to go some to beat the PlayStation 2\u2019s total of 160m \u2013 so far it\u2019s sold about 55m.<\/p>\n<p>As for that PlayStation 2 total: that\u2019s actually the first time we\u2019ve heard it, in this podcast, in 2024, despite the fact that the PS2 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2013\/jan\/04\/playstation-2-manufacture-ends-years#:~:text=It%20was%20the%20console%20that,PS2%20production%20has%20ended%20worldwide.\">discontinued in 2013<\/a>. The last official number we had for the PS2 was \u201cmore than 155m\u201d as of March 2012, a number that\u2019s still quoted on <a href=\"https:\/\/sonyinteractive.com\/en\/our-company\/business-data-sales\/\">Sony\u2019s own website<\/a>. Ryan claims that 160m was celebrated as an internal sales milestone, but Sony never actually announced it.
