But now researchers are creating a free alternative with full transparency<\/p>\n<p>A class-action <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2024\/feb\/17\/are-dating-apps-fuelling-addiction-lawsuit-against-tinder-hinge-and-match-claims-so\">lawsuit<\/a> filed in a US federal court last Valentine\u2019s Day accuses Match Group \u2013 the owners of Tinder, Hinge and OkCupid dating apps, among others \u2013 of using a \u201cpredatory business model\u201d and of doing everything in its power to keep users hooked, in flagrant opposition to Hinge\u2019s claim that it is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hinge?lang=en\">designed to be deleted<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit crystallised an ocean of dissatisfaction with the apps, and stimulated a new round of debate over their potential to harm mental health, but for scientists who study romantic relationships it sidestepped the central issue: do they work? Does using the apps increase your chances of finding your soulmate, or not?
