Why are the Dutch so keen on digital detoxes \u2013 and are there lessons for the rest of the world?<\/p>\n<p>When I walk into Amsterdam\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/caf%C3%A9-brecht-amsterdam-3\">Cafe Brecht<\/a>, I immediately want to take a picture. The old-fashioned bar \u2013 with its plush sofas, vintage art and warm lighting \u2013 is what the Dutch would call \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dutchamsterdam.nl\/155-gezellig\">gezellig<\/a>\u201d, a word with many meanings but perhaps best summed up as \u201ccosy\u201d or \u201cpleasant\u201d. My instinct is to whip out my phone and take a photo. For friends? Future reference? Who knows? But I\u2019ll have to rely on my memory, as I\u2019ve checked it at the door.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m at the cafe for a Sunday morning \u201cdigital detox hangout\u201d, organised by the burgeoning <a href=\"https:\/\/bento.me\/theofflineclub\">Offline Club<\/a>. I\u2019ve dropped my phone off in slot seven of a fancy-looking lockbox, committing to spend the next few hours unplugged. There\u2019s a set schedule: we have some time to chat at the beginning, then 45 minutes to ourselves, another 30 minutes to connect, followed by another 30 minutes of quiet time.
