If there was one clear message from football\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2021\/apr\/29\/major-sports-bodies-84-hour-social-media-boycott-over-online-abuse-facebook-twitter\">temporary boycott<\/a> of social media earlier this month, in protest at the torrent of online hate experienced disproportionately by black players, that was it.<\/p>\n<p>The former England striker Ian Wright has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2LxpeIULvPA\">said<\/a> that he\u2019d almost given up reporting the vile stuff he receives daily because nothing ever seemed to happen to the perpetrators. \u201cIt makes you feel very dehumanised. You feel like there\u2019s nothing you can do, you\u2019re helpless,\u201d he said. So two cheers, at least, for the inclusion in this week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2021\/may\/11\/what-made-it-into-the-queens-speech-and-what-was-left-out\">Queen\u2019s speech<\/a> of a long-delayed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/landmark-laws-to-keep-children-safe-stop-racial-hate-and-protect-democracy-online-published\">online safety bill<\/a> aimed at holding big tech more accountable.
