Sign up here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, my colleague Archie Bland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global\/2022\/sep\/20\/sign-up-for-the-first-edition-newsletter-our-free-news-email\">of First Edition fame<\/a> enthusiastically recommended the podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/gb\/podcast\/in-the-dark\/id1148175292\">In the Dark<\/a> to me. Despite being a super-successful investigative series \u2013 acquired last year by Cond\u00e9 Nast\/The New Yorker \u2013 I\u2019d never actually listened to the pod and its feted second season about Curtis Flowers, who was tried six times for the same murder. Or at least I <em>thought<\/em> I hadn\u2019t listened to the podcast \u2013 I had actually caught the spin-off miniseries about discontent in Dubai\u2019s royal family \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-runaway-princesses-episode-1-sisters\/id1148175292?i=1000643498891\">The Runaway Princesses<\/a> \u2013 back in January, but hadn\u2019t quite joined the dots about it being part of a larger true-crime stable (maybe I\u2019m an idiot, maybe the huge font size for \u201cRunaway Princesses\u201d and the tiny one for \u201cfrom In the Dark\u201d threw me?)<\/p>\n<p>The Runaway Princesses didn\u2019t blow me away, but I\u2019m still curious about the show which \u2013 like Serial \u2013 has risen above the true-crime surfeit and been acquired by one of the biggest names in journalism.
