That\u2019s quite a shift \u2013 and it didn\u2019t come in a way anyone was expecting. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/aug\/25\/telegram-app-founder-pavel-durov-to-appear-in-court-after-arrest-in-paris\">Jennifer Rankin<\/a> in Brussels:<\/p>\n<p><em>French judicial authorities on Sunday extended the detention of the Russian-born founder of Telegram, <\/em><em>Pavel Durov<\/em><em>, after his arrest at a Paris airport over alleged offences related to the messaging app.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When this phase of detention ends, the judge can decide to free him or press charges and remand in further custody.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2696\ufe0f Telegram abides by EU laws, including the Digital Services Act \u2013 its moderation is within industry standards and constantly improving.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2708\ufe0f Telegram\u2019s CEO Pavel Durov has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Paris prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, said the investigation concerned crimes related to illicit transactions, child sexual abuse, fraud and the refusal to communicate information to authorities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has continued to aggressively market Telegram as a \u201csecure messenger.\u201d Most recently he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2024\/05\/14\/telegram_ceo_calls_out_rival\/\">issued a scathing criticism of<\/a> Signal and WhatsApp on his personal Telegram channel, implying that those systems were backdoored by the US government, and only Telegram\u2019s independent encryption protocols were really trustworthy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It no longer feels amusing to see the Telegram organization urge people away from default-encrypted messengers, while refusing to implement essential features that would widely encrypt their own users\u2019 messages.
