If we say it is 40 books, what are they?\u201d He was using the term \u201ccanon\u201d in the sense of \u201cthe collection of works considered representative of a period or genre\u201d, but astutely qualifying it to stop Harold Bloom \u2013 the great literary critic who spent his life campaigning for a canon consisting of the great works of the past (Shakespeare, Proust, Dante, Montaigne et al) \u2013 spinning in his grave.<\/p>\n<p>Greer\u2019s challenge was immediately taken up by Patrick Collison, co-founder with his brother, John, of the fintech giant Stripe (market value $65bn) and thus among the richest Irishmen in history. Unusually among tech titans, Collison is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zkh3BHP6KJ0\">passionate advocate of reading<\/a>, and so it was perhaps predictable that he would produce <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/patrickc\/status\/1825618450837885036\">a list of 43 books<\/a> \u2013 adding a caveat that it wasn\u2019t \u201cthe list of books that I think one <em>ought<\/em> to read \u2013 it\u2019s just the list that I think roughly covers the major ideas that are influential here\u201d.
