An unsettling new book advocates a closer relationship between Silicon Valley and the US government to harness artificial intelligence in the name of national security<\/p>\n

Oscar Wilde\u2019s quip, \u201cLife imitates art far more than art imitates life\u201d, needs updating: replace \u201cart\u201d with \u201cAI\u201d. The Amazon page<\/a> for Alexander C Karp and Nicholas W Zapiska\u2019s new book, The Technological Republic: Hard Power, Soft Belief and the Future of the West<\/a><\/em>, also lists: a \u201cworkbook\u201d containing \u201ckey takeaways\u201d from the volume; a second volume on how the Karp\/Zapiska tome \u201ccan help you navigate life\u201d; and a third offering another \u201cworkbook\u201d comprising a \u201cMaster Plan for Navigating Digital Age and the Future of Society\u201d. It is conceivable that these parasitical works were written by humans, but I wouldn\u2019t bet on it.<\/p>\n

Mr Karp, the lead author of the big book, is an interesting guy. He has a BA in philosophy from an American liberal arts college, a law degree from Stanford and a PhD in neoclassical social theory from Goethe University in Frankfurt. So he\u2019s not your average geek. And yet he\u2019s an object of obsessive interest to people both inside and outside the tech industry. Why? Because in 2003 he \u2013 together with Peter Thiel and three others \u2013 founded a secretive tech company called Palantir. And some of the initial funding came from the investment arm of \u2013 wait for it \u2013 the CIA!<\/p>\n
