But his band\u2019s world-building \u2013 setting resource wars in imagined cyberpunk clubs \u2013 is no less dramatic<\/p>\n<p>As a child, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2018\/oct\/06\/daveed-diggs-days-before-i-started-on-hamilton-i-got-thrown-against-a-fence-by-police\">Daveed Diggs<\/a> and his schoolfriend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talkhouse.com\/artist\/william-huston\/\">William Hutson<\/a> drew pictures inspired by the space-age album covers of funk legends Parliament, filled with gleaming UFOs and eccentric interplanetary travellers. Diggs would grow up to become an actor, winning a Tony award as the first person to play the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2015\/feb\/18\/hamilton-review-founding-father-gets-a-hip-hop-makeover\">Hamilton<\/a>. He\u2019s since voiced Sebastian the crab in The Little Mermaid\u2019s live-action remake and appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/sep\/28\/nickel-boys-review-intensely-moving-story-of-surviving-a-racist-reform-school\">Nickel Boys<\/a>, which was nominated twice at this year\u2019s Oscars. But away from Hollywood and Broadway, he\u2019s still dreaming up fantastical sci-fi worlds with Hutson \u2013 now through one of the most imaginative, harrowing projects in underground rap.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Hutson\u2019s college roommate Jonathan Snipes \u2013 who had a similar childhood experience, inspired by the otherworldly paintings adorning classical albums \u2013 the friends formed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clppng.com\/\">Clipping<\/a> in Los Angeles in 2010. Over Hutson and Snipes\u2019s production, Diggs weaves blood-soaked horror stories about racial violence or fables of enslaved people in outer space.
