The island\u2019s steep rocky cliffs give way to indigo blue waters dotted with monk seals and stony coral. No humans have lived on Mokumanamana, but it has the world\u2019s highest density of ancient Hawaiian religious sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sits as a boundary between what Native Hawaiians refer to as \u2018p\u014d\u2019, the darkness, and \u2018au\u2019, the light,\u201d said William Aila, the former chair of Hawaii\u2019s department of land and natural resources. \u201cWhen a Hawaiian passes, their soul makes its way from wherever it is in the main Hawaiian Islands, up to the North-western Hawaiian Islands.
