Avatar director James Cameron has called AI actors \u201chorrifying\u201d and said what generative AI technology creates is \u201can average\u201d.<\/p>\n

Cameron was speaking to CBS on Sunday Morning<\/a> in the run-up to the release of the third Avatar film, subtitled Fire and Ash, and was asked about the pioneering technology he used in his film-making. After praising motion-capture performance as \u201ca celebration of the actor-director moment\u201d, Cameron expressed his disdain for artificial intelligence. \u201cGo to the other end of the spectrum [from motion capture] and you\u2019ve got generative AI, where they can make up a character. They can make up an actor. They can make up a performance from scratch with a text prompt. It\u2019s like, no. That\u2019s horrifying to me. That\u2019s the opposite. That\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re not<\/em> doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
