So many ills can be laid at its door: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2025\/dec\/09\/youth-movement-digital-justice-spreading-across-europe\">social media harms<\/a>, misinformation, polarisation, mining and misuse of personal data, environmental negligence, tax avoidance, the list goes on. Added to which, Silicon Valley\u2019s leaders seem all too keen to cosy up to the Trump administration, to shower the president with bribes \u2013 sorry, gifts \u2013 and remain silent about his worsening political overreach. And that\u2019s before we get to the rampant \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2024\/nov\/26\/enshittification-macquarie-dictionary-word-of-the-year-explained\">enshittification<\/a>\u201d, as the tech writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/audio\/2025\/nov\/24\/enshittification-how-we-got-the-internet-no-one-asked-for-podcast\">Cory Doctorow<\/a> describes it, which means that by design many big tech products have become less useful and more extractive than they were when we originally signed up to them.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve entered into a Faustian pact with these companies: \u201cWhile it\u2019s brilliant to have access to high-quality products and software, very often for \u2018free\u2019, it\u2019s important to remember that there is a trade-off involved \u2013 often of our personal data and privacy,\u201d says Lisa Barber, tech editor at Which?
