Driverless \u2018robotaxis\u2019 will be accepting fares in Britain\u2019s biggest city by the end of next year. Can they deal with London\u2019s medieval roads, hordes of pedestrians and errant ebikers? I got in the passenger seat to find out<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m really excited to show you this,\u201d says Alex Kendall, the CEO of Wayve, as he gets behind the wheel of one of the company\u2019s electric Ford Mustangs. Then he does \u2026 nothing. The car pulls up to a junction at a busy road in King\u2019s Cross, London, all by itself. \u201cYou can see that it\u2019s going to control the speed, steering, brake, indicators,\u201d he says to me \u2013 I\u2019m in the passenger seat. \u201cIt\u2019s making decisions as it goes. Here we\u2019ve got an unprotected turn, where we\u2019ve got to wait for a gap in traffic \u2026\u201d The steering wheel spins by itself and the car pulls out smoothly.<\/p>\n

Riding in a self-driving car for the first time is a little like your first flight in an aeroplane: borderline terrifying for a few seconds, then reassuringly unremarkable. At least, that is my experience. By the time I step out, 20 minutes later, I\u2019m convinced Wayve is a better driver than most humans \u2013 better than me, anyway.<\/p>\n
