Sony has just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/mar\/27\/sony-playstation-5-price-hike-ai-iran-war\">raised the price<\/a> of its console by another \u00a390, the latest in a series of hikes. This is unprecedented: consoles have always <em>decreased <\/em>in price over time (until they become retro collectibles \u2013 the other day, I saw someone asking \u00a3200 for a SNES on Vinted). So, what\u2019s going on?<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this is another case of artificial intelligence ruining things for everyone. AI data centres need lots and lots and lots of computing power to be able to present you with lies whenever you Google anything, and this has pushed up demand and pricing for RAM and storage. This isn\u2019t the only reason prices are rising \u2013 the wars in Ukraine and Iran have caused global economic disruption, and rampant inflation has eaten into many companies\u2019 bottom line.
