The press conference for the Met Costume Institute\u2019s spring exhibition is always a stately affair, but this year it was giving \u201cfeudal lady addresses her serfs\u201d or perhaps \u201cMarie Antoinette during the last days of Versailles\u201d. Here, among the spectacular marble sculptures of the art museum\u2019s American wing, was a beaming Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos<\/a>, who Anna Wintour<\/a> introduced as a \u201cforce for joy\u201d, before adding that \u201cshe and her husband, Jeff, have shown with this event that they genuinely, genuinely care about giving back\u201d. Meanwhile, in the outside world, protests against the Bezoses\u2019 involvement<\/a> had been raging for days. The discrepancy between the word on the street and the deference within the glass-ceilinged room was head-spinning.<\/p>\n

The Met Gala <\/a>has recently become a magnet for anti-excess protests, but this was its most controversial yet, owing to the $10m patronage of its honorary co-chairs, centibillionaires Jeff Bezos and Lauren S\u00e1nchez Bezos. It was not the first time Jeff Bezos bankrolled the gala \u2013 Amazon was its lead sponsor in 2012. But this year\u2019s event came at a moment of soaring inequality, as Bezos\u2019s personal wealth has mushroomed and his Donald Trump-appeasing decisions<\/a> have made him less popular than ever with New York City\u2019s left-leaning fashion and arts crowd.<\/p>\n
