Last week, at the end of a performance of the drama Inter Alia in London\u2019s West End, the actor Rosamund Pike took to the stage after the curtain call to announce that she had seen someone texting during the performance. \u201cI just wanted to say for anyone going to the theatre, it\u2019s a huge thing that we\u2019re trying to give you. I am trying to tell you a story, and I\u2019m feeling you, and I hope you\u2019re feeling me too \u2026 Maybe it was very important, and maybe you\u2019re a doctor, and you\u2019re saving someone\u2019s life, and I hope you are, but we do see these, we do feel them.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is the correct etiquette when using your phone? Myka Meier, author of Modern Etiquette Made Easy, says: \u201cIt is always thinking about other people before yourself when you\u2019re on the phone.\u201d This also means being aware of how disabled people might use, and rely on, their phones. As an academic with hearing loss pointed out to the BBC<\/a> after Pike\u2019s comments, bans on phones in theatres, or public shaming, could exclude disabled people in audiences, such as those who use hearing aid apps and need to adjust the settings.<\/p>\n
