As Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and their peers have grown richer and more influential, Gil Dur\u00e1n argues they have all but abandoned democracy \u2013 and found the perfect government to enable them<\/p>\n

In April, Gil Dur\u00e1n was permanently banned from Elon Musk\u2019s X for posting just two words. Dur\u00e1n was responding to a post from the tech company Palantir outlining its 22\u2011point \u201ctechnological manifesto\u201d<\/a>, which praised American \u201chard power\u201d, western culture and AI weapons, denounced inclusivity and called for compulsory national service. Dur\u00e1n responded: \u201cTLDR: Fascism\u201d (TLDR is short for \u201ctoo long, didn\u2019t read\u201d).<\/p>\n

Dur\u00e1n didn\u2019t break any of X\u2019s written rules, he points out over a video call from San Francisco \u2013 so much for Musk\u2019s \u201cfree-speech absolutism\u201d<\/a>. His ban might just have had something to do with his preceding tweet, showing the cover of his new book, The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy. The book\u2019s central argument is that big tech is no longer our friend, as many of its billionaire owners have seized economic and political control and are steering the fate of the planet towards their own bizarre, apocalyptic visions.<\/p>\n
