Data privacy watchdog says websites make it difficult for users to refuse cookies<\/p>\n

France\u2019s data privacy watchdog has fined Google and Facebook a combined \u20ac210m (\u00a3176m) for hampering users\u2019 ability to stop the companies tracking their online activity.<\/p>\n

The Commission Nationale de l\u2019Informatique et des Libert\u00e9s<\/em> (CNIL) said on Thursday it had fined Google a record \u20ac150m for making it difficult for internet users to refuse cookies \u2013 small text files that build up a profile of a person\u2019s web activity for commercial purposes. It fined Facebook \u20ac60m for the same reason.<\/p>\n
