While big tech always seems to be facing some sort of \u2013 usually well-deserved \u2013 public criticism lately, the ire has mostly focused on social media. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter executives have all had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/03\/25\/980510388\/facebook-twitter-google-ceos-testify-before-congress-4-things-to-know\">testify<\/a> before Congress about their platforms\u2019 roles in spreading misinformation and being used as organizing tools for events like the January 6 storming of the US Capitol. This is all on top of a history of alleged labor violations, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/2\/25\/18229714\/cognizant-facebook-content-moderator-interviews-trauma-working-conditions-arizona\">complaints<\/a> that traumatized content moderators are paid poverty wages and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/07\/02\/886544638\/we-have-a-black-people-problem-facebook-worker-claims-racial-discrimination\">reports<\/a> that Black employees face racial discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Video game companies mirror many of the alleged problems of social media yet have long evaded accountability, outside of the occasional attempt to ban a violent video game.
