Sometimes, you get stuck. Taking a few pictures with an iPhone is like a liberation. A reset, a moment of reflection. You see things differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noy arrived in Nur-Sultan, the capital of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/kazakhstan\" title=\"\">Kazakhstan<\/a>, mid-pandemic, after many years in Africa, where he had documented the daily lives of persecuted LGBTQ+ Ugandans; he had won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldpressphoto.org\/frederic-noy-bio\" title=\"\">World Press Photo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panos.co.uk\/news\/frederic-non-wins-visa-dor-prize-at-visa-pour-limage-photo-festival-in-perpignan-france\/\" title=\"\">Visa d\u2019Or<\/a> awards for his work on the environmental disaster in Lake Victoria. \u201cI wanted to go somewhere as distant and as different as possible,\u201d he says. \u201cKazakhstan was the last country to leave the USSR, and it\u2019s still constructing its identity. That\u2019s what interested me.
