The New York Times acquisition of Wordle<\/a> has left devotees of the mega-hit word guessing game fearful that it will \u2013 like the newspaper\u2019s crossword and other puzzles \u2013 end up locked behind a paywall, despite the Times\u2019 assurances to the contrary.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s unlikely that any other game will achieve the viral success of Wordle, there are free, browser-based alternatives out there to puzzle over as you sip your morning coffee.<\/p>\n
