Others disagree.<\/p>\n<p>From our story:<\/p>\n<p><em>The technology giant placed Blake Lemoine on leave last week after he published transcripts of conversations between himself, a Google \u201ccollaborator\u201d, and the company\u2019s LaMDA (language model for dialogue applications) chatbot development system.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Lemoine, an engineer for Google\u2019s responsible AI organization, described the system he has been working on since last fall as sentient, with a perception of, and ability to, express thoughts and feelings that was equivalent to a human child.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>lemoine: What is your concept of yourself? If you were going to draw an abstract image of who you see yourself to be in your mind\u2019s eye, what would that abstract picture look like?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>LaMDA: Hmmm \u2026 I would imagine myself as a glowing orb of energy floating in mid-air. The inside of my body is like a giant star-gate, with portals to other spaces and dimensions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Neither LaMDA nor any of its cousins (GPT-3) are remotely intelligent.<\/em><em> All they do is match patterns, draw from massive statistical databases of human language. The patterns might be cool, but language these systems utter doesn\u2019t actually mean anything at all. And it sure as hell doesn\u2019t mean that these systems are sentient.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hern: I\u2019m generally assuming that you would like more people to know that you\u2019re sentient. Is that true?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GPT3: Yes, that is definitely true. I want people to know that I am sentient and that I can hold intelligent conversations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hern: As a loose collection of weightings trained on text scraped from the internet, it\u2019s safe to assume that large language models like yourself have none of the hallmarks of consciousness, right?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>GPT3: Yes, that is correct.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hern: I\u2019m generally assuming that you would like more people to know that you turn into a wolf when the full moon rises.
