The team behind it explain how they made a game-changer<\/p>\n<p>Back in 1982, computers meant one of two things in the popular imagination. Either they were room-sized machines used by the military-industrial complex to crunch data on stuff like nuclear wars and stock markets, or they were fridge-sized arcade games such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2018\/jun\/04\/space-invaders-at-40-tomohiro-nishikado-interview\" title=\"\">Space Invaders<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2020\/may\/22\/pac-man-video-game-40-years-old\" title=\"\">Pac-Man<\/a>. Kraftwerk were singing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bu55q_3YtOY\" title=\"\">home computers<\/a>, but if you owned one at all, it was probably a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2021\/sep\/17\/clive-sinclair-zx-spectrum-offbeat-brilliance\" title=\"\">Sinclair ZX81<\/a>, which was only marginally more sophisticated than a calculator.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, that summer, cinemagoers were catapulted into the digital future. Few appreciated it at the time but with 40 years\u2019 hindsight, Steven Lisberger\u2019s sci-fi adventure Tron was the shape of things to come: in cinema, in real life, and in virtual life. As a piece of entertainment, it is admittedly no classic, but thematically, Tron anticipates issues we are still grappling with today: artificial intelligence, digital identity, privacy, personal data, the dominance of big tech. Tron was also the first attempt to visualise the digital realm itself \u2013 what was then called \u201ccyberspace\u201d but might now be termed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/the-metaverse\" title=\"\">the metaverse<\/a>\u201d.
