A Silicon Valley startup offers voice-altering tech to call center workers around the world. Is it fighting bias \u2013 or perpetuating it?<\/p>\n

\u201cHi, good morning. I\u2019m calling in from Bangalore, India.\u201d I\u2019m talking on speakerphone to a man with an obvious Indian accent. He pauses. \u201cNow I have enabled the accent translation,\u201d he says. It\u2019s the same person, but he sounds completely different: loud and slightly nasal, impossible to distinguish from the accents of my friends in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Only after he had spoken a few more sentences did I notice a hint of the software changing his voice: it rendered the word \u201ctechnology\u201d with an unnatural cadence and stress on the wrong syllable. Still, it was hard not to be impressed \u2013 and disturbed.<\/p>\n
