Where I live, the leaves are falling in droves and the Glasgow rain is turning them into slippery mulch that makes every trip to the shops an obstacle course. But one hallmark of autumn is missing: a promising run of new video games to cosy up with as the nights lengthen. Usually this is when the end-of-year rush starts, but not in 2022. It\u2019s as if the video games industry is giving us a little extra time to watch the absolute circus that UK politics has become in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>The actual reasons for this relative drought are manifold, boiling down to the delayed effects of Covid-era development and, well, money. But there\u2019s one game that could save these dreary few months, one that I\u2019ve been looking forward to for years: God of War Ragnar\u00f6k. I\u2019ve been playing it to review and, for once, the developer is allowing me to write about a game ahead of its release.<\/p>\n<p>Some developments in the story from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2022\/oct\/18\/ndas-code-names-and-poor-pay-the-voice-actors-speaking-out\">last week\u2019s newsletter<\/a>: Bayonetta\u2019s voice actor Hellena Taylor has clarified the fee she was offered to reprise her role in Bayonetta 3, after sources at Platinum Games went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.videogameschronicle.com\/news\/bayonetta-actor-confirms-she-was-offered-more-than-first-implied-for-third-game\/\">VGC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-18\/bayonetta-3-voice-actor-s-pay-dispute-overshadows-nintendo-game?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> to challenge her account of events. The highest she was offered was $15,000 \u2013 significantly more than the $4,000 that she was later offered, to voice some cameo lines, and more consistent with fees other video game voice actors have reported is typical (and is in-line with SAG\/AFTRA union rules in the US). It is a shame that Taylor\u2019s lack of clarity about her fee has muddied the waters, because video game actors <em>are<\/em> underpaid, especially because they do not earn royalty income like TV and film actors do. I spoke to several actors about their pay and conditions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2022\/oct\/18\/an-insult-video-game-voice-actors-speak-out-to-demand-fair-pay\">this report<\/a>. The new voice of Bayonetta, Jennifer Hale, released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.videogameschronicle.com\/news\/jennifer-hale-releases-statement-addressing-bayonetta-3-voice-acting-controversy\/\">a statement<\/a> reiterating her support of fair pay for game actors.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.videogameschronicle.com\/news\/uk-regulator-asks-members-of-the-public-to-share-their-views-on-the-xbox-activision-deal\/\">inviting opinions from the public<\/a> about Microsoft\u2019s proposed acquisition of the Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard. I\u2019m sure that will end well.<\/p>\n<p>Konami has exhumed its ancient horror series Silent Hill. Glasgow developer No Code, which made Stories Untold, mentioned above, and another very interesting horror game called Observation (a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2019\/may\/22\/observation-review-playstation-4-sci-fi-space-station#:~:text=Observation%20has%20the%20formal%20innovation,totally%20unable%20to%20turn%20away\">favourite of mine<\/a>), is making<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/silent-hill-townfall-is-a-new-entry-to-the-series-from-stories-untold-developer-no-code\"> a new Silent Hill<\/a> game called Townfall. Bloober Team, meanwhile, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2022\/oct\/20\/silent-hill-2-remake-townfall-ascension-konami-transmission\">remaking Silent Hill 2<\/a>, the ancient horror series\u2019 best-known and most disturbing entry.
