The government is facing mounting criticism from children\u2019s organisations over its failure to protect young people from harmful material online, amid fears that key legislation promised in the Tory party\u2019s 2019 election manifesto to strengthen internet safety could be under threat.<\/p>\n

The Observer<\/em> understands from sources close to the discussions that hugely controversial and sensitive changes to the online safety bill<\/a> were to have been announced to parliament this week by the culture secretary, Michelle Donelan, after ministers across government had been consulted in recent days.<\/p>\n
