All around the media world, 2022\u2019s games, albums, films et cetera are being coralled into contentious rankings for everyone in the office (and the comments section) to argue over. Our own Guardian games list is prepped and ready, but I want to hear what games <em>you\u2019ve <\/em>been enjoying over the past 12 months. Hit reply on this newsletter and write me a few sentences on your favourites, and I\u2019ll compile them for an end-of-year special issue.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been reading for a while, you\u2019ll know that I have not been the luckiest when it comes to introducing video games to my children. My stepson, now 17, always loved games, but his taste diverged so massively from mine that we rarely intersected, bar a few treasurable months <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/gamesblog\/2011\/dec\/09\/minecraft-pc-mac-review#:~:text=0%20Minecraft%20release%20is%20conflicted,of%20the%20player-defined%20experience.\">when Minecraft first came out<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2014\/sep\/11\/destiny-bungie-halo-game-review\">a year of shared Destiny adventures<\/a> before he got good enough to comprehensively outplay me. These days I\u2019m constantly hassling him to try something like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2015\/mar\/24\/bloodborne-review-elegant-precise-irresistible\">Bloodborne<\/a>, when all he wants to play is first-person shooters.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>games-of-the-year lists<\/strong> have begun! Longtime Guardian games contributor Simon Parkin has picked his for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/2022-in-review\/the-best-video-games-of-2022\">the New Yorker<\/a>. It\u2019s a thoughtful and varied selection that includes several of my own favourites, and a few games I\u2019m keen to play before the year is out. (Hello, Strange Horticulture!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Game Awards<\/strong> \u2013 which its organiser Geoff Keighley pitches as the video game Oscars, glossy and ostentatious and redolent of money \u2013 are happening on Thursday in LA. Expect a couple of announcements and new trailers peppered in among the handing out of gongs, including one from Epic Games and 505 (I\u2019m betting on an open-world crime game, based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/visitrockaycity.com\/\">teaser site<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Former golden-age-of-Rare composers Kevin Bayliss, Grant Kirkhope and David Wise have released <strong>an unbelievably cheesy Christmas tune<\/strong>.
