When is an album not an album? Why, when it\u2019s a \u201cnon-fungible token\u201d, a new form of digital swag, related to cryptocurrency, being sold by artists and musicians such as Kings of Leon<\/a> and Grimes<\/a>. They\u2019re called NFTs for short, but why?<\/p>\n

Perhaps disappointingly, \u201cfungible\u201d does not mean \u201ccapable of being turned into fungi\u201d. Rather, the Latin verb fungi <\/em>means to discharge some office or perform some task, and so fungibilis<\/em> means \u201cuseful\u201d, and English \u201cfungible\u201d specifically describes useful things that are interchangeable. If I order five spoons of a certain design, it doesn\u2019t matter exactly which five of those spoons you send me.<\/p>\n
