Why, when it\u2019s a \u201cnon-fungible token\u201d, a new form of digital swag, related to cryptocurrency, being sold by artists and musicians such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2021\/mar\/04\/kings-of-leon-to-release-new-album-as-a-non-fungible-token\">Kings of Leon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2021\/mar\/02\/grimes-sells-digital-art-collection-non-fungible-tokens\">Grimes<\/a>. They\u2019re called NFTs for short, but why?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps disappointingly, \u201cfungible\u201d does not mean \u201ccapable of being turned into fungi\u201d. Rather, the Latin verb <em>fungi <\/em>means to discharge some office or perform some task, and so <em>fungibilis<\/em> means \u201cuseful\u201d, and English \u201cfungible\u201d specifically describes useful things that are interchangeable.
