Sign up here<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It seems very likely that the biggest event on the video game calendar for the past 25 years, E3, is finished.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement last week that the 2023 event had been cancelled wasn\u2019t met with a huge amount of surprise in the industry \u2013 it\u2019s enormously expensive to exhibit on the show floor, it\u2019s a major commitment for development teams (already stretched by the pandemic) to provide playable demos, and the introduction of digital-only events such as Nintendo Direct and PlayStation State of Play has shown that it\u2019s possible to reach global audiences without having to pay <a href=\"https:\/\/elitegamer.ie\/2016\/06\/27\/much-e3-really-cost\/\">anywhere between $20,000 and $1.5m<\/a> for a big booth amid the horrible expanse of downtown Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>GamesIndustry.biz has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/uk-games-market-dipped-to-705bn-in-2022\">the latest figures on the UK games market<\/a>. According to trade body UKIE, <strong>the industry was worth \u00a37.05bn<\/strong> in 2022, down 17% on 2021, but still higher than pre-pandemic figures. The biggest selling games were Fifa 23 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, surprising \u2026 exactly no one.<\/p>\n<p>Film studio Legendary has secured <strong>the movie rights to Street Fighter<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/street-fighter-movie-tv-rights-legendary-1235365168\/\">according to Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. No doubt inspired by the success of recent Sonic and The Last of Us tie-ins, the company has bravely overlooked the critical mauling handed out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2018\/jul\/16\/inside-street-fighter-movie-jean-claude-van-damme-kylie-minogue\">the original Street Fighter film<\/a> and the financial bomb of follow-up Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-03\/saudi-arabia-is-investing-38-billion-to-become-a-video-game-hub?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">a piece<\/a> looking into <strong>Saudi Arabia<\/strong>\u2019s continued efforts to diversify its economy by investing heavily in video games. This comes after Prince Mohammed bin Salman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spa.gov.sa\/viewfullstory.php?lang=en&amp;newsid=2388379#2388379\">announced<\/a> plans to make Saudi Arabia \u201cthe ultimate global hub for the games and esports sector by 2030\u201d. Bloomberg puts the investment at $38bn.
