Sign up here<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever been to see a film on its opening day \u2013 but I made the effort for the Super Mario Bros Movie last week. Using my six-year-old as a convenient excuse to see a children\u2019s movie in the middle of the day, I sat in a suspiciously quiet cinema and tried to keep a handle on my trepidation. The reviews had come out the day before, and they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2023\/apr\/04\/the-super-mario-bros-movie-review-wackily-eccentric-gamer-guys-fall-flat-on-screen\">weren\u2019t<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2023\/apr\/09\/the-super-mario-bros-movie-review-game-over-for-this-lazy-animated-mess\">good<\/a>. I anticipated spending the next 90 minutes feeling bitterly disappointed that, yet again, Hollywood had screwed up a golden opportunity to bring a beloved game to the big screen.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps my expectations were just exceedingly low \u2013 I have, after all, suffered through 30 years of offensively terrible movie adaptations of video games, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/games\/2022\/dec\/02\/from-tron-to-jumanji-the-greatest-ever-movies-about-video-games\">with only the occasional reprieve<\/a> \u2013 but I thought it was <em>fine. <\/em>It\u2019s not as surreal and funny as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2019\/may\/03\/pokemon-detective-pikachu-review-ryan-reynolds-grabs-film-by-scruff-of-the-neck\">Detective Pikachu<\/a>, nor as creative as the video-game-inspired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2013\/feb\/07\/wreck-it-ralph-review\">Wreck-it Ralph<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2021\/aug\/05\/free-guy-review-ryan-reynolds-taika-waititi-jodie-comer-video-game\">Free Guy<\/a>, but it looked right, sounded right, and didn\u2019t labour the nostalgia too much. Plenty of critics have characterised the film as a lazy and meaningless sequence of empty references \u2013 and, yes, it suffers from a distinct absence of plot \u2013 but how much narrative justification do we actually need for a trip down Rainbow Road in go-karts?
